Smart Signs: METRO Explores Next-Gen Bus Stop Amenities

A new METRO pilot program may pave the way for investments in rider amenities and real-time technology at a METRO bus stop or transit center near you.
More than a dozen digital signs have been installed at high-ridership bus stops and transit centers throughout METRO's service area. It's part of an effort to find new and innovative ways to improve the rider experience.
"This technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we ride and how we choose to get around," says METRO Chief Technology Officer Randy Frazier. "Accessible, real-time data really improves the rider experience and eliminates uncertainty. You know when your bus will arrive, how you will get to your destination and what your options are. It's empowering."
The displays offer riders information about upcoming bus arrivals, closed stops or service alerts and even alternative routes — all in real-time. Several allow riders to access interactive maps and bus route details.
"The pilot program gives us a way to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of different signage systems procured from a variety of manufacturers," says Frazier. "It also gives us an opportunity to engage riders for their feedback."
Frazier says once the demonstration is complete, staff will present their findings and recommendations to METRO's Board of Directors.
