METRO Rail Ridership Tops 250K During NCAA Final Four

At times METRORail moved nearly 6,000 passengers per hour.

The 2016 NCAA Final Four marked an incredible four days of action for college basketball fans and METRO.

The annual basketball tournament helped set historic rail ridership numbers for the Authority with more than a quarter million boardings occurring on all three rail lines.

Major events located downtown helped increase ridership on the Red Line by nearly 50 percent. This year the Red Line saw 219,000 passenger trips compared to 148,000 for 2011.

"Seeing 255,000 boardings on rail during the four day event is very impressive and shows what can happen with an expanded system," said METRO President and CEO Tom Lambert. "This success comes on the heels of record Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo ridership and it shows METRO is a key travel option."

During the 2016 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, more than 1.5 million boardings were taken on light-rail, compared to 1.3 million last year, a 23% increase.

Thousands of fans who made METRO part of their game plan enjoyed access to METRO's newest transit tools including Mobile Ticketing and Next Bus Arrival Texting. Riders were also greeted by nearly two hundred  METRO volunteer ambassadors positioned at rail platforms helping fans navigate the Final Four experience.

METRO maintained a six minute or less window for train arrivals and departures with buses absorbing any overflow. There were 4,500 boardings on the overflow buses following the games from NRG Stadium.
