Back-to-School Toolkit: Support Schools, Empower Students
The CDC offers resources for parents and teens to help start the school year successfully. For a healthy school year, focus on establishing routines, building connections, promoting healthy sleep and exercise habits, and managing stress. Check out the Back-to-School Toolkit for resources and social media tips that support student health and well-being.
Registration Open: National District Wellness Convening, November 4-6, Memphis
Action for Healthy Kids is a national non-profit that helps schools create healthier environments for students and staff. This November, they are hosting the National School District Wellness Convening in Memphis. This event will allow district wellness leaders to meet, share ideas, and bring home practical solutions. Districts doing innovative wellness work are also invited to submit a proposal to present at the Convening (deadline August 31). Visit their webpage for more details. Registration is now open!
Texas State University Texas School Safety Center: Restorative Practices for Educators
Texas State University Texas School Safety Center is providing a 4-hour virtual session where participants will first learn about what Restorative Practice is and is not, followed by why these practices are proactive and reactive tools that campuses should have in their intervention toolbox. Participants will also learn about how to facilities restorative process and implement foundational structures from a systems perspective.
Now Available: Regional and Local Health Operations Overview – Part 1
TRAIN Texas offers courses that cover important topics such as Public Health Regions (PHRs), Center for Health Emergency Preparedness and Response (CHEPR), Texas Center for Infectious Disease (TCID), and Office of Border Public Health (OBPH). These courses are great for new team members, experienced staff looking for a broader understating, and leaders focused on workforce development. Continuing education credits are offered upon attendance.
Online Vaping Prevention and Education Resource Center
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) created the Vaping Prevention and Education Resource Center. The center provides free resources that help teachers educate students about the risks of vaping and nicotine addiction. CTP also offers free materials to help parents identify vapes, talk to their kids, and keep the conversation going. Students can read real-life stories and helpful content to learn about vaping, nicotine addiction, common myths, and how to say no to vaping.
Student Physical Education and Physical Activity
The CDC offers resources for parents and students to ensure youth and adolescents are physically active during and after school. For a healthy school year, children and adolescents should have 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity each day. Physical activity has been shown to improve students’ grades and tests scores along with helping them stay focused in the classroom.
Reducing Added Sugars at School Breakfast: Training Guide
The USDA Food and Nutrition Service has created a training guide for school nutrition staff. This guide shows common sources of added sugars in school breakfast and how to reduce them. Nutrition standards related to milk, sodium and whole grains in school meals can also be helpful for parents to understand their students’ meals.
Asthma-Friendly Schools
The American Lung Association (ALA) Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative helps manage asthma in schools. This program follows the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Model. It offers a toolkit that includes easy-to-follow steps, templates, and resources. The goal is to keep students with asthma healthy, in school, and to help them focus on learning.
Texas Targeted Opioid Response
Texas Targeted Opioid Response (TTOR) program aims to address opioid crisis by increasing access to medications for opioid use disorder and reducing opioid-related overdose deaths through its evidence-based programming. This program provides an interactive dashboard for more information on the program and resources.
Ready Central Texas: Heat Awareness
The CDC provides resources to help residents stay cool during the summer heat. Check out the HeatRisk dashboard which allows you to search your zip code and determine the heat risk in your area so you can keep you and your family safe during the summer.
