Raising Pneumococcal Vaccine Awareness
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Streptococcus pneuomoniae is a bacterium that can cause pneumococcal disease, from mild illnesses like sinus infections to severe illnesses like meningitis. Common symptoms include fever, cough, chest pain and difficulty breathing. The pneumococcal vaccine is highly recommended to prevent the spread of this bacteria which can spread quickly in crowded settings through respiratory droplets.
The CDC recommends that children under 2 years of age be given the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV15 or PCV20) in four doses, given at two, four, six and 12-15 months. Adults 65 years and older are advised to receive a single dose of the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). People with certain medical conditions may require additional amounts or a booster shot. If they have not been previously vaccinated, catch-up doses of the vaccine are safe and recommended.
