Vaccination Record Cards
DSHS has noticed a trend of patients losing their vaccination record cards and requesting replacements from providers. We recommend that if a patient needs proof of their COVID-19 vaccination, providers can print the patient’s vaccination record from ImmTrac2.
At the time of vaccination, inform patients of the importance of keeping up with their original vaccination record card. Emphasize it’s as important as keeping up with their driver’s license, Social Security card, birth certificate, etc. Remind patients that they never know when they might need their card!
FDA Extends J&J COVID-19 Vaccine Shelf Life
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) authorized an extension of the shelf life for the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine from 3 months to 4.5 months. The decision is based on data from the manufacturer’s ongoing stability assessment studies. The vaccine is stable for at least 4.5 months when refrigerated at temperatures of 36°-46° Fahrenheit (2°-8° Celsius).
Providers can confirm the latest expiration dates of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine here: Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine Product Quality Checker (vaxcheck.jnj).
Subscribe to Expiration Date Service
COVID-19 vaccines have no preservative. Frozen vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) expire after roughly six months; refrigerated vaccines expire after 90 days (J&J/Janssen). CDC asks that jurisdictions and providers regularly check vaccine expiration dates and rotate stock to avoid waste.
The new COVID-19 Vaccine Lot Number report, available via CDC’s Vaccine Code Set Management Service, includes COVID-19 vaccine lot numbers and expiration dates provided to CDC by the vaccine manufacturers. This report is updated daily and can be used to support vaccine administration, inventory management, and jurisdiction IISs.
Correctly entered lot number and expiration date data improve the ability to monitor product safety, identify issues with lots, trace or decrement inventory, and identify expired products that were not administered. Visit CDC's Vaccine Lot Number and Expiration Date webpage and complete the registration form to request access. Contact IISInfo@cdc.gov for more information.
Expert Tip: Reporting Waste into VAOS
Waste reporting encourages careful handling and the use of every viable dose and helps the CDC to identify potential problems in shipping and cold storage operations. If COVID-19 vaccines are wasted, providers need to report the waste in VAOS, and then dispose of the vaccines. For information on how to report waste in VAOS, you can reference our Reporting Waste job aid.
