Just a heads-up: City offices will be closed on June 19th in observance of Juneteenth and will also close on July 4th for Independence Day. Emergency services will remain available, so you’re in good hands.
With the Fourth of July just around the corner, let’s keep our celebrations safe and enjoyable. Remember, fireworks are not only dangerous but also illegal in our city, and celebratory gunfire can endanger lives and property. Let’s celebrate responsibly.

FUTURE PUBLIC ART AT GATEWAY PARK ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: TREVOR O’TOOL
Trevor O’Tool was recently selected for the Gateway Park Public Art Project. An accomplished sculptor specializing in welding, lost wax casting, and fabrication, O’Tool became a public art artist a decade ago and has commissioned works in collections in Arizona, Texas, California, and Oregon. He has a degree in Expanded Media from the University of Arizona, Tucson.

FOURTH OF JULY PUBLIC SAFETY FORUM
As the City of Fort Worth prepares to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day, the Fort Worth Police Department East Division Command, along with city employees, will host a public safety forum to provide valuable guidance and resources to our communities.
Join us to learn how to report illegal and dangerous activities, and feel free to ask questions about permit regulations and local fireworks laws. Two meetings will be held on Mondays, June 23rd and June 30th, at the Eugene McCray Community Center, starting at 6:00 PM.

TARRANT COUNTY BACK TO SCHOOL ROUNDUP
The 19th Annual Tarrant County Back to School Roundup is scheduled for Friday, August 8th from 8 AM until 2 PM. at Tarrant County College South Campus in Fort Worth.
The event provides schoolchildren and their families with school supplies and other “back-to-school essentials” necessary to return to school ready and equipped for a successful academic year. The Roundup is a collaborative effort between Tarrant County, the county’s 20 school districts, the City of Fort Worth, public health department, state agencies, non-profit organizations, corporations and volunteers.
Families must pre-register for this years event. Families not pre-registered will not be admitted to the event.

 ANDREW “DOC” SESSION COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Darren McGrier is a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in customer service and sales. Originally from Buffalo, NY, he’s called Fort Worth home for the past three years. Darren currently serves as the Recreational Programmer at Andrew “Doc” Session Community Center, where he oversees after-school and summer programs for children ages 5–12, leads senior activities, and organizes events that serve and engage the community.
He joined the City of Fort Worth in March 2022 as a Recreation Assistant and quickly gained his footing, earning two promotions within a year. Darren is vital in connecting residents with essential resources like fresh produce, vaccine and flu shot clinics, and clothing drives. He also helps coordinate major events, including the Fall Festival and National Night Out. Outside of work, he’s a passionate singer, avid gamer, and energetic streamer known for his creativity and ability to connect with people of all ages.
As a Recreational Programmer, Darren oversees a summer day camp with 31 children and three recreation leaders in training, ensuring all activities and lessons run smoothly. He supervises staff, manages community center operations, handles rentals and memberships, and partners with vendors to bring valuable resources to the center. He also plans a wide range of programming for both children and seniors who regularly visit.
What inspires Darren most is the chance to make a real impact, especially in the lives of kids. Watching them grow, learn, and become confident, kind, and capable individuals is what drives him. He also finds deep fulfillment in supporting seniors, a passion that began while working in paratransit, transporting older adults to appointments and retirement homes. Living in the same community he serves makes the work even more personal and motivates him to go above and beyond daily.
Darren works to foster a strong sense of belonging both within the center and throughout the surrounding neighborhoods. He stays actively connected to residents and plans inclusive events that reflect the community's needs and interests. He aims to bridge generations and create a welcoming space where everyone feels seen, valued, and included.
His favorite program? “Without a doubt, the children’s program.” He loves being a positive role model and helping shape the growth of Fort Worth’s youth. For Darren, it’s about more than just programming—it’s about supporting families and making a lasting difference that goes beyond the walls of the center.
Looking ahead, the center is gearing up for its Back-to-School Giveaway on Friday, August 1, where families can pick up backpacks and essential school supplies. Darren also works alongside newly hired Supervisor Jocelyn Johnson to roll out new programming and events that unite the community.
Neighbors and organizations that want to support the center are always welcome, whether through volunteering, donating supplies, or simply showing up. As Darren says, “Every bit helps. Let’s continue to grow together and uplift our community.”
District 11 is grateful to have community leaders like Darren who uplift our youth and seniors and ensure that together, we build a better, stronger Fort Worth. Thank you, Darren!

UPSPIRE PROGRAM RECOGNITION
At a recent City Council work session, the East Lancaster UpSpire team and Environmental Services were recognized for their outstanding work.
The UpSpire team dedicates five days a week to cleaning up our city, including the Lancaster area, directly contributing to a cleaner Fort Worth. On average, the UpSpire team and Environmental Services remove 20 million pounds of litter from our streets each year. Their efforts are a testament to balancing human dignity with public safety, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

LITERACY ROUNDUP LAUNCHES FREE SCREENING INITIATIVE
Literacy Roundup is a City of Fort Worth initiative in partnership with Go Beyond Grades and the Sid W. Richardson Foundation, offering free literacy screenings for youth and resources for parents and caretakers.
From June 9 to 20, registered Camp Fort Worth students at Chisholm Trail, Como, Diamond Hill, Fire Station, Riverside, and Victory Forest community centers will have access to these screenings.
This effort is led by literacy consultant Caroline James, who aims to raise awareness of often undiagnosed learning disabilities and help families advocate for their children.
Not enrolled in Camp Fort Worth? No problem! Free screenings will also be offered throughout the summer at East Regional Library and Southwest Regional Library.
Families can visit the Fort Worth Literacy Roundup website to complete an interest form and receive a link to schedule a screening.

PAMELA RAMBO SEXTON NAMED NEW ASSISITANT ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES DIRECTOR
The Environmental Services Department announced that Pamela Rambo Sexton joined the department as the new Assistant Environmental Services Director. In this role, Rambo Sexton will lead the Business Services Division.
Rambo Sexton brings over 23 years of financial oversight and budget development leadership, including expertise in enterprise and special revenue funds, capital delivery and project management. During her time with the City of Fort Worth, Rambo Sexton has served Fort Worth within the Neighborhood Services, Transportation & Public Works and Park & Recreation departments, as well as within the City Manager’s Office – Office of Budget.
In her new role, Rambo Sexton will oversee monthly budget reporting and financial operations, procurement, capital planning, long-range planning, data analytics and human resources for the Environmental Services Department. The position will oversee the department’s $110M budget, which includes the Solid Waste Fund, the Environmental Protection Fund, department-specific General Fund cost centers, and various state and federal grants.

The Camp Fort Worth program is full of challenging and creative activities for children ages 5 to 12. Each day promises nonstop fun and excitement.

The City of Fort Worth supports recycling; however, there are many myths out there that create barriers to the recycling process by causing confusion and spreading misinformation.
From cardboard to plastics, we will dispel the myths and provide you the facts needed to make recycling easier and more effective.
Know What to Throw:
- Cans should be rinsed, but labels can be left on.
- Paper and cardboard must be clean and dry.
- Glass containers should be rinsed, but labels can be left on. All colors are accepted.
- Plastic should be rinsed but leave the caps on afterward, and containers must be hard plastic.
- Plastic bags or film are not accepted.
- No clothing or linens.

Fort Worth has added 311 to the list of ways to contact the City Call Center.
Residents are now able to call either 311 or the 10-digit number 817-392-1234 to reach City services. 311, a free nonemergency line, can only be dialed from a wireless device and must called from within Fort Worth city limits.
