Council District 3

Here's what's happening in District 3 neighborhoods.

Councilmember Byrd

Hello friends!

The kids are back in school, football has kicked-off, and fall is officially underway. However, we have all spent the last week with eyes and hearts turned south to our fellow Texans affected by Hurricane Harvey. I have heard from many of you asking how you can help our fellow Texans. The City of Fort Worth is engaged in relief efforts, from sheltering evacuees to coordinating donations.

The fastest way to help the people of southeast Texas is to make a financial donation to the charity of your choice:

  • Red Cross
  • Salvation Army
  • Tarrant Area Food Bank
  • MassCare Task Force

All Goodwill locations in Fort Worth are accepting donations, including:

  • Baby diapers and formula
  • Socks and underwear in new packaging
  • Blankets and towels
  • Plus-size clothing

The Tarrant Area Food Bank is also accepting donations of non-perishable food and cases of water at their location at 2600 Cullen Street, Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For updated information on how you can support the City’s efforts, please visit www.fwhelpforharvey.com. The road to recovery will be long. Together, Texans can stand together to help each other in this time of need.

    Chapel Creek Bridge

The Chapel Creek Boulevard bridge over I-30 will be closed from Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. until the afternoon of Sept. 9. This closure is to allow for the installation of a storm drain along the north side of the road.

To access both eastbound and westbound I-30, motorists should use White Settlement Road to the north and Loop 820. Police officers will assist with traffic control during this time, but motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.

While there are no plans to add temporary intersection signals (stoplights) during the construction phase, there will be a traffic signal in place when the project is completed. Completion is expected at the end of year 2018.

You can find more information about the Chapel Creek Bridge closure here

    PD breakfast

I had the pleasure of joining Fort Worth Neighborhood Police Officers for breakfast at Cracker Barrel. Fort Worth Police Officers have also been sent to help in areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. I am thankful for these officers who put their lives at risk for our safety and the well-being of our fellow Texans.

    Las Vegas Trail Update

This August, the Star-Telegram hosted a panel discussion on the future of Las Vegas Trail. I had the privilege of sitting on this panel alongside some of the fiercest advocates of the Trail, including two school principals, a non-profit leader, and a Fort Worth police officer. The response was incredibly encouraging. With more than 400 attendees from the community, the panel received thoughtful and insightful feedback. You can read more about the forum discussion here.

The forum was only the beginning of a community-wide effort to revitalize the Trail. Although the panelists came from diverse backgrounds and experiences, a common theme emerged: the need for coordination of services. My office has recently announced the Las Vegas Trail Revitalization Project.  Our first meeting is scheduled for October 24th, where all members of the community are invited to join us as we begin to coordinate efforts for revitalization. The success of Las Vegas Trail will require a community-wide effort. Non-profits, faith-based groups, businesses, and individuals must all play an integral role as we work toward a long-term solution for the area.
