Critter Highlight - Green Tree Frog (Dryophytes cinereus)
The American green tree frog is a common species of New World tree frog belonging to the family Hylidae. A common backyard species, it is popular as a pet.
They are green, medium-sized, and up to 2.5 inches long. Their bodies are usually green in shades from bright yellowish-olive to lime green.
The color can change depending on lighting or temperature. Males have wrinkled throats (indicating the vocal pouch) and are slightly smaller than females.
Here are a few interesting facts about Green Tree Frogs:
- These little frogs tend to be nocturnal (which means they sleep during the daytime (like many teenagers)), and in captivity they will be the most active once the lights are off.
- American green tree frogs are insectivores, usually consuming flies, mosquitoes, and other small insects such as crickets.
- The green tree frog became the state amphibian of Louisiana in 1993 and of Georgia in 2005.

The cute little critters are available to check out for a 2-week period to help enhance teaching activities through the Living Science Material Center Co-Op page.

This month's spotlight is on "Sheep Eyes".
The anatomy of the human eye can be best shown and understood by the actual dissection of an eye. One eye of choice for dissection, that closely resembles the human eye, is that of the sheep.
Differences between the two eye types are mentioned by the teacher as the dissection is completed by the student under their direction.
Interesting facts about Sheep Eyes:
- The sheep eye excels in peripheral vision and motion detection, while the human eye has superior visual acuity and color discrimination.
- The sheep eye pupil is horizontal and elongated, while the human eye pupil is typically round.
- Sheep have dichromatic vision, perceiving colors in a limited range of wavelengths. They have good color discrimination in the blue and green range, but have difficulty distinguishing between shades of red and green.
If your campus is NOT a member of the Co-op, you can order these from the Living Science eStore at this link.
