The I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) Program covers approximately 20 miles of I-35 from N. Walters Street to FM 1103 in Bexar, Comal, and Guadalupe Counties. The I-35 NEX Program–including Central, South, and North projects – involves the construction of two elevated structures that will carry two general purpose lanes and one HOV lane in each direction. The elevated structures will be constructed between the existing I-35 mainlanes and frontage roads. The program also includes incidental construction necessary to transition the elevated lanes and connectors with the existing highways including revisions to ramps and frontage roads and accommodations for drainage, utilities, signs, and other highway improvements.

Construction in the I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) corridor is progressing, and the scope of this I-35 NEX newsletter is growing with it.
Up until now, we’ve focused on the I-35 NEX Central project, the 9.5 miles of elevated, non-tolled lanes currently under construction from I-410 North to FM 3009. But that’s just one of the five projects that make up the I-35 NEX Program, which will expand 20 miles of I-35 from North Walters Street near the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio to FM 1103 in Comal County.
The I-35 NEX South project broke ground in May of this year, and the columns that will support the elevated lanes on that project are beginning to appear. This first phase of the South project is a four-mile stretch of I-35 from I-410 North to I-410 South and includes three elevated lanes in both directions. The contractor for this part of the I-35 NEX project is Lone Star Constructors, NEX.
For the other three phases of the I-35 NEX project, a contractor was recently selected for the next phase of I-35 NEX South, and construction on that project will begin early next year. Contractor selection is expected in 2025 for the final phase of I-35 NEX South, and the I-35 NEX North project in Guadalupe and Comal counties will be the final leg of the program.

"35 seconds behind I-35 NEX" is a snapshot of the progress on the I-35 NEX project. The bridge deck of the elevated lanes on westbound I-410 near Perin Beitel is almost complete. Check out the column caps that are under construction on southbound I-35 and Thousand Oaks Drive, and the bridge beams stretching from Toepperwein Road and Shin Oak Drive on I-35. See how much headway we've made in those and other locations. |

The I-35 NEX project avoided major disruptions to the mainlanes of Loop 1604 through an innovative yet simple solution to reconstruct a drainage culvert 45 feet under Loop 1604. Instead of excavating from above to replace the culvert, an was pushed nearly 400 feet within the existing culvert, forming a new, smoother 100,000 square feet of temporary walls would have been required, some nearly 50 feet high, close to ongoing traffic and major detours. The innovative solution eliminated all these risks. Workers were not exposed to traffic, heavy machinery was unnecessary, and truck movements to and from the project site were significantly reduced. This eliminated risks, saved
