The I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) Program covers approximately 20 miles of I-35 from N. Walters Street to FM 1103 in Bexar, Comal, and Guadalupe Counties. The I-35 NEX Program–including Central, South, and North projects – involves the construction of two elevated structures that will carry two general purpose lanes and one HOV lane in each direction. The elevated structures will be constructed between the existing I-35 mainlanes and frontage roads. The program also includes incidental construction necessary to transition the elevated lanes and connectors with the existing highways including revisions to ramps and frontage roads and accommodations for drainage, utilities, signs, and other highway improvements.

As children head back to school, TxDOT is reminding everyone to be extra cautious in school zones and around school buses in order to help keep kids safe.
School zones can be chaotic, with children walking or biking to school, sometimes darting between cars, and getting on and off buses. Unfortunately, traffic crashes can and do happen. In 2023, there were 748 traffic crashes in Texas school zones, resulting in one fatality and 14 serious injuries. The most common causes of these crashes were speeding, distracted driving, and failure to yield the right of way.
TxDOT urges drivers to be on the lookout for young pedestrians and cyclists as the school year begins.
Here are some ways you can ensure safety as you drive through school zones:
-
Stay alert and off your phone.
-
Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
-
Obey school zone speed limits.
-
Adhere to your school's designated drop-off and pick-up areas.
-
Watch for children who run across the street or between vehicles.

In early August, Alamo NEX Construction (ANC) reached over 60 percent completion of the nearly 1,500 drilled shafts on the I-35 NEX Central project. The drilled shaft in this video is 60 feet deep and 78 inches in diameter. It will help support the connector ramp from the northbound elevated lanes of I-35 to the westbound mainlanes of Loop 1604. A drilled shaft is the foundation of the majority of the bridge columns on the I-35 NEX Central project. Watch as ANC installs a rebar cage approximately 70 feet long into the ground to create the foundation of the bridge column. More than 70 cubic yards of concrete will be poured into this rebar cage to create the underground support for the elevated lanes. |
