Single Sticker Update

Texas Department of Motor Vehicles

Please review and distribute as appropriate.

Dear County Tax-Assessor Collector,

We believe we have isolated the issue that is requiring additional vehicle inspections to be verified manually. The issue is related to some inspection records not coming into the system with the correct formatting.  Our technical staff worked most of the night, and the revised programming is being tested today for those records containing misformatted data. To avoid taking the Registration and Titling System down during business hours, we plan to implement the correction this evening.

We will continue to work closely with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) on this matter.

Customers needing manual verification may present their Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) issued by the inspection station or the information can be verified from www.mytxcar.org.

We have heard that some inspection stations may have inadvertently collected the state’s portion of the vehicle inspection fee at the time of inspection. To date, we have received no evidence of customers being overcharged by the inspection stations. If you have examples of a VIR indicating that a customer has been overcharged, please forward that to your regional service center immediately. As a reminder, as of March 1, the state's portion of the inspection fee should be collected at the time of registration.

DPS has stated that customers who feel they were overcharged should return to their place of inspection for a refund.  Customers having any other complaints regarding inspection issues should contact their nearest DPS Regional Headquarters or the DPS Regulatory Services Contact Center at 512-424-7293, where they will select the prompt for Vehicle Inspection.  TxDMV, DPS and TCEQ will continue to monitor this issue.

TxDMV is researching an issue related to some webSUB transactions being incorrectly forced to manually verify for February renewals. We will share information as soon as it is available. Yesterday some counties reported confusion related to customers whose registration expired in February and inspection expires in March, but they waited until March to renew. Customers who renew their registration during the same month that their inspection expires must pass a new inspection prior to renewal.

Thank you for your continued support and patience during the implementation of the single sticker program. If you have additional technical questions, please contact the RTS help desk.
