Update to Hurricane Harvey Procedures

Texas Department of Motor Vehicles

Please review and distribute as appropriate.

The TxDMV is continuing to evaluate solutions for processing registration renewals and title transactions for individuals affected by Hurricane Harvey. As you are aware, the transportation code was recently amended to allow other counties to process transactions for customers that are not residents of their county under certain circumstances. However, the Registration and Title System has not been programed at this time to facilitate this as a viable option. Please be patient as we work on alternatives.

We are aware that customers are requesting counties other than their county of residence to process registration renewals. Please provide those customers the option of renewing their registration online.  State law was amended to allow the registration receipt to serve as proof of registration. Please keep in mind individuals processing renewals online must provide a mailing address where they can receive the sticker and that is not impacted by the disaster.

Thank you for all the work you are doing to keep Texas moving and the offers to assist in providing services to those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. The TxDMV is still evaluating options that provide the least amount of burden to those that have been displaced by this tragic event. We will send out notifications as soon as we have additional information to share.

Thank you,

Jeremiah Kuntz, Director
Vehicle Titles and Registration Division
