Change to Inspection Requirements for Certain Trailers

Texas Department of Motor Vehicles

Please review and distribute as appropriate.

Beginning on September 1, 2017, vehicle dealers are no longer required to inspect trailers, semitrailers, and pole trailers as part of the state inspection program if the trailer has a gross vehicle weight of 7,500 lbs. or less. Under current law, trailers, semitrailers, and pole trailers 4,500 lbs. or less are already exempt from the inspection requirement based on their gross vehicle weight.

This change is the result of Senate Bill 1001, enacted by the 85th Regular Session, Texas Legislature, which added Transportation Code, Sections 502.012 and 548.510, and amended Section 548.052 regarding the inspection exemption for trailers, semitrailers, and pole trailers.

Senate Bill 1001 maintains a fee of $7.50 for trailers, semitrailers, and pole trailers with a gross vehicle weight of 4,501 lbs. to 7,500 lbs. The fee will now be described as the “Mobility/Clean Air Fee” on receipts issued through the Registration and Title System (RTS) and webDEALER. The RTS and webDEALER systems are programmed to reflect this name change on September 1. This fee supports the Texas Mobility Fund, Clean Air Account, and the General Revenue Fund.

Thank you for your help in distributing this information.
