One hundred years ago, when horse drawn buggies and wagons still traveled dirt roads, the first metal license plates for automobiles were issued in Texas. To honor the century mark of Texas license plates, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) will offer a limited edition commemorative specialty plate starting in September.
The “100 Year Plate” features an image of the original registration insignia from 1917 as the centerpiece. The specialty plate will be available for a $30 fee in addition to the annual registration fee and may be issued to passenger cars and trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 18,000 lbs. or less.
This commemorative specialty plate will be available to order for a limited time, and the first 100 sets of plates issued will display the number “100” followed by three letters. After the first 100 sets of plates are sold, the plate will be issued a random six-digit, alphanumeric series without the number “100.” Motorists opting to display this commemorative specialty plate on their vehicle may renew the plate each year as long as the registration on the vehicle does not become expired for more than 60 days.
Beginning September 1, 2017, customers may visit their local county tax assessor-collector’s office to order, and an Internet link will be provided at the www.TxDMV.gov website for online ordering. Sales of this special commemorative plate will end August 31, 2018.
