Changes to the Operation of a Golf Cart in Certain Counties

Texas Department of Motor Vehicles

Please review and distribute as appropriate.

Currently, Transportation Code, Chapter 551, defines a county in which a golf cart can legally be operated as: one that borders or contains a portion of the Red River, borders or contains a portion of the Guadalupe River and contains a part of a barrier island that borders the Gulf of Mexico or is adjacent to one of these counties, has a population of less than 30,000, and contains a part of a barrier island that borders the Gulf of Mexico.

House Bill 2968, effective September 1, 2017, amends Transportation Code, Chapter 551, to expand the number of counties in which a golf cart can legally be operated by increasing the population restriction from less than 30,000 to less than 37,000 and to include a peninsula that borders the Gulf of Mexico.
