Dallas High School Students Attend Texas Tech University

Summer Camp

Generous Grant from Grant Thornton LLP Make It Possible

Dallas, TX - Thanks to the generosity of Grant Thornton LLP, seven high school students from Dallas had the opportunity to attend Camp L.E.A.D. at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas earlier this summer.

Grant Thornton LLP is the U.S. member firm of Grant Thornton International Ltd, one of the six global audit, tax and advisory organizations. The Dallas firm, and specifically one of its partners, Ben Kohnle, was instrumental in securing $7500 worth of scholarships for the seven students attending this 4-day camp. “As a leading international professional services firm, Grant Thornton's reputation is shaped in large part by our firm's commitment to leadership, professional excellence, and stewardship. In the Dallas office, members of our Community Action Committee determine how best to discharge our stewardship responsibilities by ‘giving back’ to the community to optimize the benefits of reinvestment in our collective future, and to be responsible corporate citizens,” states Ben Kohnle.

Camp L.E.A.D. (Leadership, Education and Development) is a newly-created leadership and development program at Texas Tech University. Students entering their junior year in high school attended the camp, where they participated in activities that focused on leadership, teamwork, communication skills, influencing skills and personal wellness.

In all, fifty students attended this year’s camp, including seven Dallas students from W. H. Adamson High School in Oak Cliff. This was a pilot program for future L.E.A.D. camps at Texas Tech University, but administrators and staff were surprised by the tremendous successes accomplished at the end of the camp. Texas Tech University is already preparing for next summer’s program and is anticipating expanding the program to other high schools throughout the state.

City of Dallas Councilwoman Delia Jasso, who represents District 1 in Oak Cliff, is extremely proud of the students from Adamson High School who attended this camp. “Grant Thornton’s commitment to focusing on students who are interested in college exemplifies a great partnership,” states Jasso.

Without the financial assistance from Grant Thornton LLP, these students may have not had the opportunity to participate in this program. Kohnle states, “We are honored to have been able to play a role in this significant initiative, alongside other civic and educational leaders throughout the community, in collaboration with Texas Tech University. We believe this was a great way to allow future leaders to continue to develop their leadership capabilities in order to continue a legacy of professional excellence in the Dallas business community.”
