Legendary Jazz Saxophonists This Friday Bring Smooth Sounds to
Free Outdoor Concert at Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center

Unfold your lawn chairs and lay out the picnic blanket! It will be an evening of music, poetry and comedy when Smooth Jazz and Soul in the Park gets under way from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 22 at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, 2901 Pennsylvania Ave. at Meyers St.
This free outdoor performance features the melodic sounds of saxophonists Herbie Johnson and his quartet and David Carr Jr. Among the other entertainment is a performance by comedian KC Mack and spoken word recitations by several local poets and writers. Radio personality KJ of KRNB 105.7 is the stage emcee.
Other event attractions are a children’s area featuring fitness games, face painting and prizes and an information expo presented by Capital One Bank, Wellcare, Frazier Court Revitalization and the National Bone Marrow Group Registry. Food trucks providing concessions will be Samson’s and Gourmet Hot Dogs and Texas Snow Cones.
Smooth Jazz and Soul is presented by the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department. For concert information, call the recreation center at (214) 670-8363.
David Carr Jr’s refreshing new blend of contemporary jazz, combined with an R&B/Funk flair has earned him a reputation and sound which separates him from many other artists of today. Coupled with his provocative stage presence and innovative stylings, his smooth, yet rhythmic sound has been compared with such greats as Grover Washington, Jr. and David Sanborn.
Dallas native Herbie Johnson and his quartet have performed in major hotels and numerous venues in the metroplex for more than 20 years. He is joined by musicians Roger Boykin, keyboards; Bruce Mendosa, bass; and Herman Samples, drums.
KJ was an on-air personality at the #1 urban station in the Louisville market. Her career took off as she advanced to Music Director, then Assistant Program Director, and eventually earning the honor of becoming the first African American Female to program three urban radio properties simultaneously. KJ’s career also had stops in South Carolina and North Carolina before landing the midday shift at Smooth R&B 105.7 in Dallas.
