Update on Trash & Recycling Alley-To-Curb Transition

Dear Sanitation Customer,
The Department of Sanitation is reviewing trash and recycling collection in the narrowest alleys, including yours, that present hazards to safe and efficient service.
Earlier this year, we announced a plan to move some customers from alley pickup to curbside pickup based on alley width and access. That plan is now temporarily paused while we further evaluate the feasibility of alternative methods that might allow us to keep alley trash and recycling pickup in some areas.
While we continue this review, please remember these important points about alley service:
- Keep alleys clear: You must keep alleys clear. This means removing vegetation, tree branches, and other obstacles that block the alley pavement or hanging lower than 15 feet above it, as well as clearing the area between the pavement and your property.
- Place carts correctly: Put your roll carts out with the lids closed. Leave at least 3 feet of space on each side and 1½ feet of space at the back. Keep carts away from fences, poles, gas meters, and other objects. Do not place carts on the alley pavement where they will block trucks.
- Follow the rules: Sanitation staff may provide additional reminders or written notices if problems are found, but failure to correct ongoing issues could lead to further compliance action.
- Alley service may be suspended: Alley collection will be stopped and moved to the curb on a block-by-block basis if alley conditions or obstructions prevent crews from working safely.
In the next few weeks, you will receive a short survey in the mail from us asking for your feedback about alleyway services. Your input will help shape decisions about how these services are provided going forward.
