Dallas Airport System Elevates Black History Month with Inspiring Activations

DALLAS, TX – In a resolute dedication to cultivating diversity and offering enlightening educational experiences, the Dallas Airport System (DAS) announces a series of events to commemorate Black History Month at both Dallas Love Field (DAL) and Dallas Executive Airport (DEA).

Adding a meaningful touch to the celebration, DAL proudly features a Divine 9 art installation in honor of Black History Month for the first time in an airport setting. Formally comprising the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), the Divine 9 consists of nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations. These organizations, collectively called the "D9," hold significant historical and cultural importance within the African American community, contributing to advancing education, service, and leadership. The thoughtful art exhibit at DAL includes donated branded items from local NPHC members, representing the diverse and influential D9 organizations. This unique and innovative display symbolizes the commitment to showcasing and honoring the value of African American fraternities and sororities. It can be viewed through February 29, 2024, between the TSA security screening checkpoint and baggage claim on the terminal's public side.

In addition to the art installation, on February 22, 2024, the Department of Aviation (DOA) is set to host a pioneering career development day at the Commemorative Air Force – Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center. The event will welcome the City of Dallas' Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) graduates, Divine 9 members, and Black Employee Support Team (BEST) employees. The day will feature a range of sessions, including welcome remarks from the City Manager, a panel discussion with HBCU and Divine 9 Elected Officials and area business leaders, an RBD airport tour, and wellness workshops.

Underlining the commitment to education, on February 28, 2024, DAS will present the inaugural "Leaps & Bounds" all-day event at Frontiers of Flight Museum in collaboration with the Dallas Independent School District (DISD). This educational workshop will host Captain Barrington Irving – a 2X Guinness World Records holder and an aviation trailblazer who will share his passion and insights with DISD administrators, faculty/staff, and 250 middle and high school students.

The workshop will address students' perennial question: "When will I ever use what I learned in school in my real life?" Attendees will depart with various giveaways, including a personalized book signed by Captain Irving, inspiring the participating students.

Internally, the Department of Aviation (DOA) has scheduled several employee engagements to commemorate Black History Month. Rozalind Dickerson Cleaver, Airport Relations/Community Engagement Manager, emphasizes the significance of these events, stating, "At DAS, we are committed to celebrating diversity and providing educational programs and workshops that are not only free for the community but also offer valuable information that individuals may not have access to otherwise. These events exemplify our dedication to fostering a culture of learning and inclusion."
