Dallas, TX – In a ceremony this morning, the newly elected Dallas City Mayor and City Council were officially sworn in at the AT&T Performing Arts Center Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House. The term for Mayor Eric Johnson is 2019 through 2023. The term for the City Council is 2019 through 2021.
As the 60th elected Mayor of Dallas, during the Inauguration ceremony, Mayor Johnson outlined his vision for the City focusing on the following key areas: ethics reform, education and workforce development, public safety, and using data to foster innovation.
“Dallas voters did more than cast a vote on June 8th, they cast a vision. They made a clear choice about who they want to be and where they want to go. Our mission in the coming years will be to fulfill this vision for our city. To create a brighter future and to build an even better Dallas: a Dallas that works for every person, in every neighborhood,” said Mayor Johnson in his inaugural address.
Mayor Johnson, a Dallas native, is a practicing attorney with a specialty in finance. He recently represented the city of Dallas in the Texas House of Representatives for a decade before being elected Mayor. Some of his accomplishments include passing legislation allowing the Dallas Independent School District to invest funds saved by students graduating early to be used to fund full-day pre-k; as well as authoring and passing legislation, working with the Dallas Police Department, the Texas Attorney General, and statewide law enforcement, that created a statewide reporting system for officer-involved shootings in 2015 and added an enforcement mechanism to the law in 2017.
“I look forward to working with Mayor Johnson and the new Council to realize their vision for the City of Dallas,” said City Manager T.C. Broadnax, “my hope is their fresh ideas and optimism permeate City Hall and that we can challenge each other to improve the lives of Dallas residents.”
In addition to the Mayor, six new Council Members join eight Council Members who were re-elected to another term. The new Council met at City Hall in Council Chambers for their first meeting, today, and elected Council Member Adam Medrano as Mayor Pro Tem and B. Adam McGough as Deputy Mayor Pro Tem.

The City of Dallas holds Mayoral Elections every four years, and Council Elections every two years. The mayor is limited to 2 four-year terms, and council is limited to four 2-year terms.
