La Virgen de Guadalupe Art Exhibit

DALLAS, TX – The Oak Cliff Cultural Center is excited to extend its December art exhibition La Virgen de Guadalupe. The exhibition will be on view at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center from December 10, 2011 through January 20th, 2012. A closing reception will be held on January 20th, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Both the exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public.

The exhibition is curated by Jose Vargas and features various artworks composed from a wide array of media by several artists from across the state. This eclectic exhibition will feature a variety of artistic depictions of the virgin of Guadalupe, an important symbol for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. An iconic figure that represents both the historical and progressive facets of the Latin American people, La Virgen de Guadalupe continues to be a prominent representation of Hispanic culture. Featured artists include Genaro Hernández, Terry K. Smith, Carlos Quadra, Apryl Begay, Alfredo Calderón, Lilia Estrada, Sandra Moreno, Raul Servin, Ernesto Espinoza, Jacque Forsher, Alfonso Estrada, Anne L. Hines, Paul Carranza, Jacinta Hernandez, Rafael Marques Osorio, Rebecca Guy, Armando Sebastian, José Vargas, Refugia Moran, Fifi Caballero Benson, Juan J. Hernández, Romi Masucci and Fred Gardner. 

Vargas has curated art exhibitions in Dallas for well over 18 years. Previous shows include the popular "El Corazón Art" and "El Dia de los Muertos" exhibits. Including La Virgen de Guadalupe, these exhibits are held annually. Since 1992, he has participated in over 100 exhibitions. From 2005-2009 he worked as the Gallery Coordinator for the Ice House. Vargas is known for being an ardent promoter of the arts, as well as an artist. He has earned acclamation for his black and white photography and recently returned to painting after a 30 year hiatus.

Located in a historic storefront in the vibrant commercial district of Jefferson Avenue in Oak Cliff, the Oak Cliff Cultural Center opened its doors in August 2010. The facility was purchased and renovated by the City of Dallas through the 2003 Bond Program to function as a permanent City-owned arts center where residents and visitors of Oak Cliff could experience a variety of arts and cultural programs. The 5,000 sq. ft. storefront features a visual arts gallery and a dance studio/rehearsal space. The Oak Cliff Cultural Center is open Tuesday – Friday, 3:00-9:00 p.m., and Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
