Dallas Library events Saturday will celebrate Women’s History Month

Dallas - A project to digitally preserve the experiences of women who have marched for equality; panel discussions on the impact of women’s marches and Womanist and Black Feminist themes; and a “Women of Power” photography exhibit highlight the Dallas Public Library’s celebration of Women’s History Month. 

All events will be held at the Central Library, 1515 Young St. on Saturday, March 10:

Our Voices: The Oral History Project, will be held from 11 a.m. to noon and from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the third floor Study Room. The library will record oral histories from women who have participated in marches or protests, which will be digitized and kept in the library’s collection. A Year Later: Dallas, Diversity, and the Women’s March, will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Community Exchange room on the first floor. The impact of women’s marches on society and politics and efforts to increase diversity and inclusiveness within these movements will be discussed. Panelists include State Representative Victoria Neave, organizer of the Dallas Women’s March; Dr. Candice Bledsoe, SMU faculty member and director of the Action Research Center; Rhetta Bowers, chair of the Dallas Women's March; Portia Cantrell, Municipal Library Board member; and attorney Jayla Wilkerson. 

Drinking Lemonade: Feminism, Womanism & Beyonce, will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Laurie Evans Studio, third floor.  Panelists will discuss Womanist and Black Feminist themes illustrated in Beyonce’s Lemonade visual album. Panelists include Dr. Angela Ards, Associate Professor of English and Journalism at Boston College; Dr. Phillips-Cunningham, Associate Professor and Director of the Undergraduate Department of Multicultural Women’s and Gender Studies at Texas Woman’s University; and Akwete Tyehimba, member of the United States of Africa Revolutionary Party.

Powerful Women Photography Exhibit, will be on display on the fourth floor from March 10 to March 31. The exhibit will include works by Dallas area photographers representing women or womanhood as powerful.

“Women’s History with Tea.”  Celebrate women's historical achievements over a cup of tea! 

Bachman Lake Library, 9480 Webb Chapel Road, 1 p.m. March 10 and March 24.

Family craft time “Celebrating Women in Our Lives.” 

White Rock Hills Library, 9150 Ferguson Road, 2 to 4 p.m. March 18
