Statement on the Elimination of DACA
Dallas — Deputy Mayor Pro-Tem Adam Medrano and Councilmember Omar Narvaez issued the following statement on the announcement of the elimination of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a program that protects undocumented young people who grew up in the United States from deportation:
“The elimination of this program is wrong. It not only hurts over 800,000 young people in our country and sets back our local community which will damage our cities' economy," said Councilmember Narvaez.
Ending DACA without a clear pathway towards citizenship does nothing but harm those who followed the guidelines, worked hard, and counted America as their only home. Since 2012, DACA has afforded eligible young people the opportunity to contribute to our economy, serve in our military, and give back to our communities without the fear of deportation. It has allowed them to attend school unafraid and unashamed.
“DREAMers are good, hardworking people. They are our neighbors, students, friends, and family members. This repeal will disrupt their lives and those close to them,” said Councilmember Narvaez.
With over 120,000 DACA beneficiaries in Texas, our state is second to California in eligible individuals. According to the North Texas Dream Team, a local immigrant-led grassroots organization, DACA recipients should seek to attend a DACA Informational Session in order to understand the status of their work permit and to get involved in local organizing at Immi.gr/FightForward for English or Immi.gr/LuchaSigue for Spanish.
We call upon the residents of Dallas to call their Congressperson and demand them to take swift action on this issue and pass bipartisan legislation with a clear path to citizenship.
