General News

East Dallas' favorite lounge sprouts shop with rock-and-roll roots

New shop The Good Pagoda has opened at 9026 Garland Road, and is from the same creative minds behind Lounge Here, Good Records and the Polyphonic Spree. The shop has a mix of gifts, jewelry, home décor, vinyl and more, and is located next door to Lounge Here. Source: Dallas Culture Map, December 8, 2016.

Hot 'Hoods - Trinity Groves

Mixed-use development Trinity Groves continues to re-energize its West Dallas neighborhood, with its restaurant component receiving national recognition as an example on how to revitalize the urban core. Phase 2 is now underway, with development of a hotel, residential, and retail in the works. Source: Bis Now, November 23, 2016.

Business News

Co-working giant WeWork opening first Dallas location

New York-based WeWork is opening its first Dallas co-working location in January. Located at 1920 McKinney Ave, the space will have collaborative workspaces for folks who want to drop in, reserve a desk or rent an office. WeWork plans to open a second location at Thanksgiving Tower in spring 2017. Source: Dallas Morning News, November 29, 2016.

Thompson Hotels signs onto $240M Drever redevelopment project at 1401 Elm Street

It’s been announced that Thompson Hotels will open and operate a boutique hotel in the 1401 Elm Street redevelopment project in downtown Dallas. Scheduled to open in 2018, the 216-room hotel will be called the Thompson Dallas at The Drever. In addition to the hotel, there are plans for apartments, a spa, and retail and office space. Downtown Dallas is getting new Courtyard by Marriott hotel

A new 12-story Courtyard by Marriott hotel is coming to Houston and Wood Streets. Plans call for a rooftop sky bar and more than 4,000 square feet of meeting space on the top floor. The hotel is scheduled to open in eighteen months and is one of several hotel projects planned in the downtown area. Source: Dallas Morning News, December 23, 2016.

Why restaurants are flocking to downtown Dallas

With over 10,000 residents, 135,000 workers, and an increasing number of tourists, it’s no wonder that restaurants are flocking to downtown Dallas. Downtown Dallas Inc. says approximately 58 restaurants have opened this year and an additional 92 are in the development pipeline. Source: Dallas Business Journal, December 9, 2016.

An exclusive look inside Harwood's latest urban high-rise tower

Construction is underway on Harwood International’s latest addition to Dallas’ changing skyline, Harwood No. 10. The 22-story, mixed-use tower will have more than 14,000 square feet of retail and restaurants. The ground floor retail design is being modeled on European, pedestrian-friendly streetscapes, which will help connect Harwood No. 10 with its neighborhood. Developers working on office, apartment, hotel projects at Valley View site in Dallas

Redevelopment plans are advancing for multiple projects at Valley View Mall, the mostly vacant shopping center at LBJ Freeway and Montfort Road. With investors and developers having bought up much of the land between the Galleria Dallas and the mall, plans are underway to build a 5-acre park, apartments, retail space, restaurants and other mixed-use development. Freeman Audio Visual completes long-term deal at I-30 business center development in Dallas

Freeman Audio Visual is consolidating its operations at Pinnacle Park in Southern Dallas where it recently signed a long-term lease for 202,137 square feet. The company will be located at I-30 Business Center III, currently under development at the business park, and expects to consolidate operations at the new facility in January.   • The Council for Community and Economic Research publishes a quarterly Cost of Living Index to provide an accurate measure to compare cost of living differences among urban areas. Items on which the index is based have been chosen to reflect different categories of consumer expenditures.

  • Continued declines in oil and gas industry activity have led to a sustained lower composite index cost of living score for Houston compared to Dallas.
