Dallas - The 35th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Birthday Celebration kicks off on Friday, January 13, 2017 with a series of
events dedicated to honoring and celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. King. Special
events include the MLK Celebration Fair, a candlelight ceremony hosted by Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., a formal awards banquet and a parade down MLK
Boulevard.
The theme of
this year’s celebration is “Breaking the Chains of Injustice.” All
activities are open to the general public, but a ticket must be purchased for the
awards banquet.

Celebration Fair: Friday, January 13, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at
the MLK Jr. Recreation Center- 2901 Pennsylvania Avenue,

Banquet and Afterglow: Saturday,
January 14, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at The Fairmont

MLK Parade: Monday, January 16, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. The
parade route begins at MLK Boulevard at Holmes St. and will proceed East down MLK Boulevard to Fair Park. Participants
include local high school bands, floats, community/civic groups, churches and a
live radio broadcast.
The MLK Celebration
Fair will serve the community with health, employment and educational
opportunities. Hiring managers, college recruiters and healthcare professionals
have joined forces to bring the Celebration Fair to the MLK Center.
The Candlelight
Ceremony is sponsored by the Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, Inc. Winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King Essay Contest will be

The Awards Banquet and Afterglow keynote speaker is Dr. Walter Kimbrough,
President of Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Guests can enjoy
dinner, a silent auction and a live performance from the Dillard University
choir. The “Afterglow” event, a professional mixer and networking opportunity,
will take place immediately after the banquet. Special guests include Dallas
Mayor Mike Rawlings, Dallas City Council members and other elected officials. Individual tickets are $85 which can be
purchased in person at the MLK Center and online. Table sponsorships start at
$1,000.
