Dallas Park and Recreation Launches Outdoor Adventure Program
Under-served youth will learn life long recreational skills while exploring the world around them
DALLAS - The Dallas Parks Foundation, in partnership with the Dallas Park and Recreation Department, is giving 360 inner-city children the opportunity to explore the world around them by learning the basic fundamentals of several recreational activities. The Outdoor Adventure program will target minorities, low-income and physically and mentally challenged children.
“We are very grateful for the grant provided by the Dallas Parks Foundation and the Texas Parks and Wildlife for our new Outdoor Adventure program,” said Crystal R. Ross, Dallas Park and Recreation Assistant Director. “We’ll be able to provide some great outdoor adventures for children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to do so.”
The 1-year program will give kids the opportunity to participate in activities like mountain biking, fishing, nature photography, geocaching, camping and archery. Participants will master these activities while using our parks and trails as their classroom.
The Outdoor Adventures program kicks off this Friday at Cedar Hill State Park from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Prospective participants and their families have already been selected and will be given the opportunity to explore all five target activities during Friday’s kickoff. Youth participants showing a great amount of interest in the program will be selected for an opportunity to attend an overnight camping workshop this Fall. "This new program is right in line with our mission of enhancing the quality of life of our citizens by providing outdoor recreational activities and teaching the importance of preserving our natural and physical resources,” said Ross. “We are really excited about this opportunity and look forward to making lasting impressions on these young participants.”
