Dallas Public Library’s Fairy Tale Closet opens for prom season;
Prom dresses will be given away at Martin Luther King, Jr. Branch
Dallas – South Dallas high school students can do more than just check out a book from the Dallas Public Library. They can also get a free prom dress. Hundreds of gowns in various sizes and styles will be available from the library’s Fairy Tale Closet, as well as a small selection of shoes and accessories. Makeup artists will be also be on hand to give advice for the big night.
Teens who want to pick out a free dress should register in advance for an appointment from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday March 26 at the MLK Jr. Branch Library, 2922 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. by calling (214) 670-0344.
The Fairy Tale Closet began at the MLK Jr. Branch in 2014 with donations from individuals and a huge collection from St. Luke Community United Methodist Church, which continues to be a supporter of the program. Since then, women from across the city have raided their closets to fill the Fairy Tale Closet, including bridesmaid shops and women’s groups. This year, the University Park Public Library held a dress drive that pulled in more than 160 gowns.
“Girls and their mothers come from all over the Metroplex for this event,” said Library Youth Services Administrator Melissa Dease. “It really shows how expensive prom can be and how many families need the little bit of help to give their daughters something special.”
The Dallas Public Library operates the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library and 28 branch locations. A library card is free for any Dallas resident. For information on the many free programs and services available at the Dallas Public Library visit www.dallaslibrary.org.
