Fix A Leak Week Aims To Save Dallas Water, Lower Bills

Dallas, TX - Minor leaks account for more than 1 trillion gallons of water wasted every year in U.S. homes. Since 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense® program has promoted Fix a Leak Week in March each year to heighten public awareness about the need to repair those pesky drips.

Home Depot stores across North Texas, with support from Dallas Water Utilities and the Tarrant Regional Water District, have coordinated to provide free Fix a Leak Workshops on Saturday, March 19. Workshops are available at all Home Depot Stores in North Texas:
·         10:00 a.m.-10:40 a.m.          (Repair/Replace Leaking Faucets)
·         10:40 a.m.-11:20 a.m.          (Repair/Replace Leaking Toilets)
·         11:20 a.m.-12:00 p.m.          (Repair/Replace Sprinkler Heads)

There is also a free do-it-yourself plumbing repairs workshop on Tuesday, March 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center (2922 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, Dallas, TX 75215). Joshua Knickerbocker, a licensed plumber with Dallas Water Utilities will be the instructor. Below are some of the topics that will be covered at the workshop:
·         Replacing toilet flapper valves
·         Fixing leaky faucets
·         Installing faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads
·         Water Conservation tips

Space is limited, please register online.

“We’re hoping that this program will heighten public awareness about the importance of checking household fixtures and sprinkler systems for leaks,” Division Manager for City of Dallas Water Utilities Carole R. Davis says. “Doing so not only saves money, it also saves our precious water resources.”

A leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year. Click here for educational and instructional videos from Dallas Water Utilities.

If you are a Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) customer and live in a house built before 1994 and haven’t yet replaced your old toilets with high-efficiency models, click here for more information on the City of Dallas’s toilet replacement program.

DWU also has a Minor Plumbing Repair (MPR) Program that offers assistance with minor plumbing problems and fixtures that may cause water waste and higher water bills to customers who meet the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development income guidelines.
