 Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Standing with Survivors, Pursuing Justice
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month — a reminder that too many of our neighbors suffer in silence, and that our justice system must be ready, vigilant, and caring.
In Shelby County, our Domestic Violence Unit is one of the busiest in the state, processing thousands of cases each year — over 4,100 in 2024, including eight homicides. Of the 11 cases that went to jury trial this year, 10 resulted in convictions. Those numbers reflect not only the scale of the problem, but the commitment of our prosecutors to pursue justice.
Domestic violence is increasing — up roughly 2 % in 2024 — even as overall crime in Shelby County declines. That fact underscores that violence behind closed doors often hides from view, even as it devastates lives.

Due to the annual TN District Attorneys General Conference—an event where many Tennessee prosecutors complete their required Continuing Legal Education (CLE) training—court sessions were limited this week. Regular proceedings will resume next week.
DA Office Staff joins Faith & Blue expungement clinic

Staff from the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office volunteered after hours to assist residents at the Faith & Blue Expungement Clinic, hosted by the Memphis Police Department at Parkway Village Church of Christ. The event offered participants the opportunity to clear eligible criminal records, register to vote, and learn about local resources that promote civic engagement and second chances.

DA Mulroy attended the Haywood County Branch NAACP’s annual Freedom Fund Banquet, held at the Carver High School gymnasium. The event celebrates community leadership, unity, and the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice, recognizing individuals who have made meaningful contributions to Haywood County and beyond.

Although an investigation revealed McKinney was killed by friendly fire, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office claimed Taylor’s actions were the cause of Officer McKinney’s death.
