DA Mulroy Highlights Accomplishments for One-Year Anniversary

September5

September 1, 2023, marked the one-year anniversary of DA Mulroy being sworn into office as Shelby County District Attorney. Below is a partial overview of  accomplishments since taking office.

  • A refocus on violent crime by deemphasizing charges involving marijuana possession, late fines and fees and instead issuing a new policy on non-fatal shootings and aggravated assaults, regardless of the outcome, preventing probation for any case involving a gun. Our new process allows prosecutors to settle those cases but only dismiss them with approval from the DA or Deputy DA.
  • Justice Review Unit launched in December--only the second of its kind in the state and the first to focus on wrongful sentences and convictions. This independent unit does not work regularly with law enforcement or the rest of the DA's Office to ensure independence and objectivity in reviewing wrongful convictions and Officer Involved Fatalities. **This was just in time for its work in the Tyre Nichols case, again bringing Memphis national attention. JRU staff and the trial team worked quickly but thoroughly to decide on charges in that case and announce them before the video was quickly released, preventing a violent response both in Memphis and around the country. **
  • Hiring a Grant Coordinator to bring in grant dollars for much-needed programs and resources in the Office that assist victims, witnesses, and public safety.
  • Created a new Chief Data Officer position to focus on data-driven decision-making and data transparency. Additionally, the CDO leads the Office's 18-month-long partnership with Justice Innovation Labs, a national group of data experts and former prosecutors who assist offices nationwide with data.
  • Transparency has been a critical focus. The Office hosts town halls and routine press conferences while also distributing newsletters to thousands of residents and stakeholders weekly.

Please note: This is not an exhaustive list of accomplishments. A comprehensive annual report will be distributed later this fall.

Happening in Court

Cornelius Williams, charged with second-degree murder of his girlfriend Shaniece Moore in 2021, was found guilty. Williams was arrested on the scene without the murder weapon. Williams will appear in court later this month for sentencing.

ADA Monica Timmerman and ADA Regina Lucreziano are handling this case.

Reginald Jenkins was found guilty of attempted first degree murder after a shooting incident in November 2020. Jenkins was developed as a suspect after police received a tip about a possible suspect vehicle connected to Jenkins. A shell casing in the vehicle matched casings found on the scene. Jenkins will appear in court in October for sentencing.

ADA John Scott and ADA Chris Lareau are handling this case.

DA Mulroy celebrates 901 Day in the Dunk Tank

DUNK TANK

DA Mulroy spent last week with community members in Whitehaven for the South Memphis 901 Day celebration hosted by local activist, Keedran Franklin. The event featured food trucks, retail vendors, a registration booth and musical entertainment.

Participants could pay $5 for two chances to hit the target and $20 to just run and press the target. Proceeds from the dunk tank will go towards Franklin's after-school meal program and food truck for assisting other residents.

Early Grove Flyer

Our office has been invited to partner with the City Court Clerk's Office for an upcoming driver license restoration and expungement clinic. The clinic will be this Saturday, September 9th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Early Grove Baptist Church.
