DA Office Update

Happening in Court

Congratulations ADAs Kevin McAlpin and JD Hamblen on getting guilty as charged verdicts against Defendant Terrance Williams on charges of Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Criminal Attempt Murder 1, and Employing a Firearm During Attempt to Commit a Dangerous Felony. In this case, defendant Williams, an inmate, recruited relatives to attempt to murder a deputy jailer that he did not like.

tour

As part of our office's partnership with Vera Institute, and their Reimagining Prison Initiative, DA Mulroy, along with other DAs across the country, has pledged that all of our ADAs will tour a correctional facility by the end of the year. SCDAG Office ADAs will tour the Shelby County Detention Center at 1045 Mullins Station Road.

Vera Institute's Reimagining Prison Initiative aims at prison reform by, among other things, "[l]istening to the voices of corrections leaders, formerly incarcerated people, scholars, thought leaders from across the political spectrum, and members of the public." Learn more here

Members of SCDAG staff attended the Conference on Crimes Against Women in Dallas last week, an annual in-person conference that brings together leading experts from across the country to educate and train first responders, prosecutors, and other stakeholders in best practices on the identification, investigation, and prosecution of crimes against women. There were close to 3000 people from all over the country in attendance. Regarding Chase Harris:  “If he makes his bond of $210,000 through a bonding company, there will be a ‘source hearing’ to determine whether he obtained the bail funds from legal sources,” Mulroy said in the tweet. “We will seek continued detention, pending such hearing.”

From The Commercial AppealNew bail hearing procedures align with Memphis' goals of safety and justice | Opinion

The above op-ed, penned by Judge Bill Anderson (General Sessions Criminal Court and Veterans Court) along with Stella Yarbrough (Legal Director ACLU TN) and  Andrea Woods (staff attorney with the ACLU’s criminal law reform project), provides a good overview of how the new bail procedure works, and how it does not threaten public safety.
