Join MyCity Connect at the Grand Ole Opry
Our next MyCity Connect is fitting for a town known as "Music City." Join us on Wednesday, July 29 for a free visit to the Grand Ole Opry--including a trip backstage with Mayor Dean!
We'll meet for free refreshments at 5:00pm at Macaroni Grill (433 Opry Mills Drive) at the Opry Mills Mall and head to the Opry together at 6:00pm.
Spaces are limited for this event, so RSVP here as soon as possible. Please register only for people who will be able to arrive at the event before 6:00pm, and make sure you remove your name from the list by emailing newamericans@nashville.gov if you need to cancel.
We have a wait list for this event, and we will pull from that list to ensure that every ticket goes to someone who will be able to attend.
June’s MyCity Connect event showcased Nashville’s rich visual arts scene. Participants received free admission to--and an architectural tour of--the Frist Center, along with refreshments and a visit from Mayor Dean. Many participants stayed and enjoyed the Frist Friday concert series event held that evening.
MyCity Connect is an initiative from the Mayor's Office of New Americans that provides an opportunity for New Americans and more established residents to network and get to know each other while enjoying fun, free activities at some of Nashville's great civic and cultural locations.
Parent Ambassadors Needed to Assist New American Families in Metro Schools
The Mayor’s Office of New Americans and Metro Schools are
seeking volunteer Parent Ambassadors for the upcoming school year. Parent
Ambassadors mentor New American families new to Metro Schools on how to understand, navigate and succeed in the school system.
They receive extensive training, and they share their wisdom and experience
with parents from backgrounds similar to their own.
Parents who speak Arabic, Burmese, French, Kurdish, Nepali,
Somali or Spanish and whose children have attended Metro Schools are invited to
apply to become Parent Ambassadors. For an application, email newamericans@nashville.gov.
You're Invited: Riverfront Park and Ascend Amphitheater
Want a free tour of the new Riverfront Park and Ascend Amphitheater? Interested in live music and family-friendly activities? Join Mayor Dean at 310 First Avenue South from 1-5pm on Sunday, August 2 for a free community open house! Please bring school supply donations for LP Pencil Box to help make sure students have the supplies they need for this school year.
You're also invited to join Mayor Dean at 11am on Thursday, July 30 for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony at the plaza
at First and Demonbreun, near the “Light Meander” public art sculpture.
Hope to see you there!
Congrats to Gat Thach, Nashville's Own White House Champion of Change
On June 25, the White House recognized ten individuals as the World Refugee Day "Champions of Change." Nashville's own Gatluak Ter Thach, a member of the New Americans Advisory Council, was honored for his work at the Nashville International Center for Empowerment.
The White House started its Champion of Change program to feature individuals doing extraordinary work in specific fields across communities in the United States. This event was used to commemorate World Refugee Day, established to recognize the challenges and struggles many refugees face.
Congrats, Gat!
Remember to Vote!
Early voting is underway in the Metro elections for mayor, vice mayor and all 40 council seats, plus three proposed charter amendments. Mayor Dean encourages you to cast your ballot and make your voice heard! Prepare to vote by reviewing a sample ballot. Early voting is available at these locations, which include Casa Azafran.
Election Day is August 6. If necessary, a runoff election will take place September 10. To find your Election Day polling place, go here.
