Educate. Diversify. Empower

(SAINT PAUL) - Applications are now being accepted for the next City of Saint Paul Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Academy. Applications must be completed and submitted online no later than Monday, April 5, 2015.

The Summer EMS Academy is designed for diverse, low-income, young-adults from Saint Paul ages 18-24 interested in starting careers in emergency medicine. Selected candidates earn an hourly wage while attending the EMS Academy. The course includes CPR Certification, First Responder Certification, and ride-alongs with the Saint Paul Fire Department. Upon graduation, participants are eligible for National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification, nine college credits, and are prepared to work in a variety of EMT positions.

EMS Academy students attend 24 hours of class per week for 10 weeks and spend a significant time outside of class studying. The next EMS Academy runs June 15 – August 21, 2015.

“The EMS Academy’s impact goes beyond the Fire Department,” said Mayor Chris Coleman. “The Academy is providing an education and a career pipeline for the young people of Saint Paul who otherwise might not have had exposure to such professional opportunities – an important piece to building equity and strength within the department and our community.”
