FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THURSDAY, JAN. 15, 2015
Saint Paul police officers were called to 261 E. University Ave. at 2:14 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, on a report of a male sending death threats via cell phone. While en route, officers were informed that the suspect was known to possess and carry a gun.
Upon arrival, officers located the suspect sitting in the driver’s seat of an SUV that was parked facing the squad car. Officers exited their vehicle. Before they could fully approach the suspect, he accelerated the SUV and drove at a high rate of speed directly at one of the officers.
Fearing for their lives, the officers fired their department-issued handguns several times, striking the suspect. Officers ensured that no one else was in the SUV, called for St. Paul Fire Medics and rendered aid to the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officers involved in this incident are Officer Jeremy Doverspike, a seven-year veteran, and Officer Dan Peck, who has been with the department for nearly two years. Neither was injured, both have been placed on three-day administrative leave, which is department policy.
The deceased person is identified as Marcus Ryan Golden, 24, of St. Paul.
Investigators later searched the suspect’s vehicle and found a loaded handgun within immediate reach of the SUV’s driver.
This incident is under investigation and there is currently no other information available. Updates will be made public through the Saint Paul Police Department’s Twitter account, @sppdpio.
