Suspect dies following Monday morning robbery and police-involved shooting incident
A Brooklyn Park man who robbed a local grocery store at gunpoint died late this morning from wounds he sustained when he was shot by at least one Saint Paul police officer in the robbery’s aftermath.
Just after 8:30 Monday morning, police received a call that the Kowalski’s Markets grocery story in the 1200 block of Grand Avenue was being robbed. As officers arrived, they learned that the suspect had left the store through a rear entrance. Officers saw the suspect and a foot chase ensued.
Shots were fired and the suspect was struck. Saint Paul Fire Department paramedics took the suspect to Regions Hospital where he died.
While officers have preliminary information regarding the suspect’s identification, investigators will be working with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Officer to positively identify him before his identity is released.
The identities of the officers directly involved in the foot chase and shooting incident are expected to be released Tuesday morning by 11 a.m.
The investigation into what happened in the moments before, during and after the robbery continues and no other information is available at this time. No other updates are expected until 11 a.m. Tuesday. In the event that new information does become public, it will first be broadcast through the department’s Twitter account (@sppdpio).
