Greetings community,

I was honored to preside over my last Council meeting on February 5 with community members and colleagues before going on a leave of absence for my health.

I want to thank Councilmember Johnson for bringing a resolution that recognizes my service to the City of Saint Paul these last nearly seven years; Attorney General Ellison for his special presence at our meeting, and invaluable mentorship over the years; my Council colleagues and staff for their compassion, support and recognition of me as I embark on this transition; our hardworking partners in the Administration, from Mayor Carter, to our department directors, to our frontline employees who make Saint Paul happen, and everyone in between; and the countless friends, neighbors and advocates who have shaped my journey along the way.

In the coming weeks, the City Council will announce information on the process to appoint an interim Councilmember to represent my Ward, and Ramsey County Elections will confirm the date of a special election so my constituents can choose my successor. In the meantime, my office continues to be available for my constituents while I am on a leave of absence to address my immediate health needs. Please reach out to my staff at ward4@ci.stpaul.mn.us for assistance as usual with constituent needs and other support.

Amid a time of great uncertainty for our country, this moment has shown me that our community cares deeply for its own people. I love our city, and for the rest of my life, I will never forget the love and care that has been reflected back to me these last couple of weeks.

To my constituents: thank you from the bottom of my heart for the kindness you have shown me in this transition. I am excited to take the time I need to get healthy, and then return to community with you in a more sustainable way as a neighbor and a friend.

With utmost gratitude,

Mitra aka Councilmember Jalali
