Urging White House and US Census to Correct Classification of Hmong
This week, St Paul City Council passed a resolution (RES 23-1507) urging the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) to work with the U.S. Census Bureau to reclassify the Hmong Ethnic Group in all U.S. Census Data products as Southeast Asian (instead of East Asian).
This misclassification has been negatively impacting our community as data from the U.S. Census is crucial to the process of which state and local entities allocate funding and resources for aid and other assistance to the communities with the highest needs, like the Hmong and several other immigrant and refugee communities.
I was honored to stand with Thao Mee Xiong from the Coalition of Asian American Leaders - CAAL during the reading of the resolution. Key organizations leading this effort include Freedom Inc, Hmong American Partnership, Hmong National Development, Inc., Hmong Cultural Center of Butte County, Hmong Innovating Politics (HIP), Stone Soup Fresno, Southeast Asian Resource Association , The Fresno Center, and more. I also want to acknowledge our former Right Track intern Katlin Her. We are grateful for the tremendous work Katlin put together to draft a letter to the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, as well as this resolution.
This was grassroots power in action, and a testament to the organizing ability of the Hmong community who brought together elected officials, educators, subject matter experts, and many community organizations.
