On Wednesday, August 25th, the mayor and Council President Amy Brendmoen, joined library officials at the Rice Street Library to unveil a new children's reading area assembled with the help of a $125,000 grant from PNC Bank and the nonprofit Heart of America. The Kids' area, designed for children ages 3-5, offers new books and an interactive mural that incorporates community art by library staff and other artists, as well as hands-on activities geared toward discovery-based play and learning.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by a library story-time, a tradition that had been put on hold during the pandemic. PNC Bank is also funding a year-long AmeriCorps position focused on early childhood literacy and learning.
Looking further out, Council President Brendmoen is optimistic that a new North End Community Center could be erected next door to the Rice Street Library, which would create a campus-like environment for some of the city's most low-income youth. To fund construction, the city will lean on the Capital Improvement Budget and has asked the state for $16 million in general obligation bonds.
For over 20 years, the City has partnered with local district councils to organize annual Citywide Drop-off Events. Residents can properly dispose of large items and recycle materials not collected in the residential collection program.
The event will accept mattresses, appliances, and electronics for a fee, as well as confidential papers for shredding and cardboard at no cost. Non-perishable food donations will also be accepted. The list of accepted items has changed from previous years.

Located on the SW corner of Rice and Arlington, on the North End, Taste of Nepal offers a variety of menu items. You won't go wrong ordering the Nepalese Thali, Chicken Biryani, Dal Makhni or Nepalese tea. Those are just a few of the menu items that we tried. SO GOOD! Let's support our local Ward 5 businesses!
