Ward 5 welcomes right track intern nkaujliamtshuj Vang

Nkaujliamtshuj Vang

Hello everyone, my name is Nkaujliamtshuj!

You pronounce my name "Gao-Light-Sue" and you can call me "Gao" or "Light-Sue."

I am the right track intern for Ward 5 over the summer, and I am ecstatic to learn more about the ward and the community. I currently do not reside in Ward 5, but I live in Saint Paul, so I am a little familiar with the neighborhood. I recently just graduated from Johnson Senior High School, located in Saint Paul. This upcoming fall, I will be attending the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in hopes of majoring in finance and government administration. I as well, am a Traditional Hmong dancer and a youth in the Hmong Community.

This following year will be my fourth year in right track and my second year being part of the City of Saint Paul. In my previous years, I interned under the science museum, U.S. Bank, and the department of safety and inspection of Saint Paul. I had great learning experiences with all of my internships that I will bring to Ward 5 and aim to further those experiences with the community and council. I'm thrilled to be interning under Amy Brendmeon this year and learning more about the city budget. With great confidence, I will use all my efforts to plan extraordinary summer events for the community and create a safe environment for everyone, along with all members in Ward 5.

Ward 5 welcomes Jessica Larson Johnston as the new legislative aide to ward 5

Jessica Larson Johnston

Jessica Larson Johnston will be shifting professional gears after nearly two decades as a media buyer and small business owner to join Council President Amy Brendmoen and Janie Vang to comprise the Ward 5 team. She brings with her years of negotiating, strategic planning and project management experience. As a longtime collaborator with Brendmoen, she will step into the role effortlessly bringing immediate support for the 2022 budget season, as well as support to advance Brendmoen’s priorities around affordable housing, equitable programming and investments, neighborhood safety, and modernization of city services.

“The Legislative Aide role is critical for the council office, and I am delighted for the unexpected opportunity to welcome Jessica Larson Johnston to Ward 5,” said Brendmoen. “Larson Johnston’s skills will be invaluable as we navigate the American Rescue Plan dollars in this year’s budget. She will bring a fresh outlook and new energy to the important work of the city and a warm, professional approach to our community members.”

“I am thrilled for this opportunity to work alongside CP Amy Brendmoen in support of her vision for a vibrant, inclusive and prosperous St. Paul,” said Larson Johnston. “I will bring years of experience to the job and hit the ground running. It’s an honor to serve the community where I was born and raised.”

Larson Johnston is indeed a daughter of Saint Paul; a graduate of Highland HS, resident of LexHam and parent of three adult kids who grew up benefiting from the public parks, schools and libraries of Saint Paul. She plays hockey for the Mid-Ice Crisis women’s team, coached by husband DJ. She has been part of countless community projects and local political campaigns, including her sister Emily Larson’s successful bid for Mayor of Duluth.

HJK Day

Hey neighbors! HwaJeong Kim here.

It's been an honor to work with all of you. I am definitely biased but Ward 5 residents are the best the entire city. We are kind, thoughtful, engaged and always willing to help shovel a neighbor's car during winter storms. We are the best parts of the city.

There is a culture of care in the ward that grows and heals. I am so proud of the work we were able to accomplish together.

I'll see you in the neighborhood!
