Mayor Carter Lifts Mask-Mandate for St Paul City-owned Buildings and Licensed Businesses
Have you heard? This week, Mayor Melvin Carter issued an executive order lifting the mask-mandate that had previously been in place, meaning, city-owned facilities and businesses licensed by the City of St Paul are no longer required to enforce face-mask policies for staff and patrons.
I'm disheartened that the mandate has been lifted when so many of our community members have yet to be vaccinated. Were City Councilmembers included in this decision? No. I found out about the news from an MPR reporter asking for my opinion after-the fact. Listen to the broadcast here.
As councilmember for Ward 6, I URGE YOU to continue wearing facemasks in our City. While Ramsey County as a whole has reached a vaccination rate of 70.6% (meaning about 3 in every 10 people ages 12 and older are still unvaccinated), our City of St Paul is lagging behind.
In particular, zip code 55130 (from 35E to Lake Phalen, from Larpenteur Ave south to downtown, a large part of Ward 6) has the lowest vaccination rate in St Paul, with just 52% of residents vaccinated. That means about every other person ages 12 and older are still unvaccinated here! There are still many vulnerable elders, youth, and adults in our community who can still spread the virus and face hospitalization or death from COVID-19. Please continue to wear your mask, especially when indoors.
If you know a loved one or community member who has been struggling to get information on the vaccines, or who is unsure of where they can get one, please help them out!
Arlington Hills Community Center (1200 Payne Ave, St Paul, MN 55130) will be offering free vaccines every Sunday in June (--no cost, no insurance needed). Sign up here!
Walgreens, CVS, M Health Fairview, and the Roy Wilkins Auditorium are offering appointments with walk-ins available. For hours, locations, and to schedule an appointment visit the Vaccine Connector site.
Vaccine Incentives
