Hmong Day Resolution

Hmong Day Resolution

The City of Saint Paul proclaims May 14, 2021 as Hmoob Day! We recognize and celebrate the history, culture and contributions of Hmong Americans and the name Hmong/Hmoob in Minnesota and our City of Saint Paul.

On May 14, forty-six years ago, Hmong leader General Vang Pao and over 1,000 Hmong people were evacuated out of the Long Cheng military base. They had been helping American forces during the Vietnam War. That tragic and important day led to the introduction of the spoken and written name of “Hmong” to the US personnel working in Thailand and the US government. Since then, the name Hmong was recognized and used in the US, with official recognition of the Hmong people.

In the past 46 years, many Hmong refugees and their families have immigrated to the United States. Today, over 80,000 Hmong Americans are residents of Minnesota.

It is important to recognize that like many immigrant groups in our nation’s history, Hmong refugees resettled to the United States to escape war, persecution and discrimination, to find opportunities, and to better their lives and the lives of their children.

To this day, the majority of Hmong Americans have settled in our City of Saint Paul. Hmong Americans are helping build a vibrant and diverse Saint Paul, contributing culturally, academically socially, politically, and economically to our city.
