Man arrested for criminal vehicular homicide after late-night crash in Saint Paul

Saint Paul police are investigating a Friday night crash that left one man dead and another arrested on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide.

Just before midnight Friday, April 20, officers were called to an apartment on the 800 block of Blair Avenue on a report of a domestic situation. According to the 911 caller, her boyfriend was fighting with her teenage son. The caller told dispatchers that her boyfriend had a machete and had tried to stab her son with the weapon.

While en route to the call, officers were told that the suspect had taken the machete and left the residence in a van, which he was driving at a high rate of speed through nearby alleys.

One officer on the way to the call was almost struck by the suspect’s vehicle, and another saw the vehicle speeding through an alley without its lights on. Officers activated their emergency lights, but the suspect did not stop and quickly disappeared out of site. A short time later, officers heard a crash on the 800 block Sherburne Avenue.

When officers arrived at the crash scene, they saw a badly damaged garage as well as the suspect attempting to flee on foot. Shawn Michael Konder, 26, of Saint Paul, was arrested without incident. Officers also discovered a gravely injured 41-year-old male in another vehicle that had apparently been struck by the suspect’s van.

Officers called Saint Paul Fire medics to the scene. They transported the victim to Regions Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

This is an open and active case. The victim’s name and any updates on the case will be released via the police department’s Twitter account, @sppdmn, once family notifications have been made and when any additional information becomes available.
