Dear Friends and Neighbors:
I hope you're enjoying your summer. This email is a quick update on some of the major issues in our neighborhoods. As always, if the issue that most matters to you is not on this email, please feel free to contact me anytime. My contact information is at the right.
While I'm taking a brief hiatus from my Community Coffees, Happy Hours and Virtual Facebook lunches in August, to enjoy some time with my family, I will be scheduling them again in September.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve you, and look forward to hearing from you.
Skyway Changes
Since I took office in January of 2016, the safety and accessibility of our skyways has been a top concern for me and for many people who live and work in downtown Saint Paul. Last February, Deputy Mayor Kristin Beckmann and I launched a Skyway Vitality Work Group that has been examining many issues, tackling first the issue of security. Our first step is to introduce changes to the Skyway Code of Conduct and building security requirements. Watch the video below to learn more and send feedback to ward2@ci.stpaul.mn.us.
The City's new Pedestrian Safety Advocate, Fay Simer, has been working hard since spring to develop a Pedestrian Safety Plan. Among the goals of the plan are to identify proactive policies and on-going procedures to make equitable safety improvements across the city, to identify locations where pedestrian improvements are most needed, to identify programs that exist or are needed to support education and enforcement, and to promote a culture of walking in Saint Paul.
Visit Open Saint Paul
to talk about your experiences walking in Saint Paul and to sign up for
updates about the pedestrian plan.
Our search for the best transit solution for the Riverview
Corridor took an important step forward this month as the Policy Advisory
Committee (PAC) voted to release the results of a detailed technical analysis
for public review. The PAC is recommending that six alternatives be
considered for selection as our “locally preferred alternative,” including
street cars on four different routes, arterial BRT along W. 7th and
Highway 5, and a “no build” scenario in which the Route 54 bus continues to
serve the corridor at a greater frequency. Here’s a full summary of the alternatives, as
well as information on the public meetings planned for this summer.
In
addition to the formal public meetings, I’m planning a series of small, casual
conversations, where we can discuss the alternatives
together. Please e-mail me at ward2@ci.stpaul.mn.us if you’d be interested
in hosting one of these conversations in your home for a group of neighbors.
Thank you to our Right Track summer intern, Katherine Grimm (front left), pictured with Ward 1 intern, Trinity Vang.
