“Music Under Glass” - Free 8 week music series kicks off December 27, 2015

Beat the “winter-blahs” by boogying to some blues, bluegrass, and ballads in the tropical Marjorie McNeely Conservatory. Como Park Zoo & Conservatory presents “Music Under Glass,” a free, all-ages concert series inside the Conservatory’s two-acres of tropical gardens. Featuring a perfect blend of musical stylings, “Music Under Glass” will showcase some of the Twin Cities' finest musicians Sunday afternoons from 4:30pm – 6:30pm beginning December 27, 2015. Beer, wine, pop, and light snacks will be available to purchase. (Please, no outside food or beverages)
** There will be no concert on January 31 due to the Winter Carnival Orchid Show, and on February 14 due to Valentine's Dinner in the Conservatory

2015-2016 Lineup

Music Under Glass Featuring The Starfolk

12/27/2015

The Starfolk makes melody-rich chamber pop music that rocks in front man Brian Tighe’s quintessentially ethereal way. Tighe fronted power-pop darlings The Hang Ups in the 90’s, co-fronts bittersweet girl-boy poppers The Owls, and plays lead guitar with the belovedly hush-toned Jeremy Messersmith. In The Starfolk, Tighe is joined by Allison LaBonne (The Owls, Typsy Panthre) on bass, Jacqueline Ultan (Jelloslave, Saltee) on cello, and Stephen Ittner (The Hang Ups, The Owls) on drums.

Music Under Glass Featuring The Last Revel

1/3/2016

Consisting of three members, The Last Revel uses traditional folk-minded three part harmonies with honest and meaningful lyrics to deliver a passionate and soul stirring performance. On a backbone of rebellious rock attitude and raw traditional instrumentation, band members pride themselves on an unrelenting work ethic and a deep hunger to write, perform, and entertain.

African guitarist, singer and composer Siama Matuzungidi was a key player in the development of the hybrid called soukous - a blend of African and Cuban rhythms with American soul music. Past performances have included the National Folk Festival in Nashville, and the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Jacqueline Ultan's unique versatility as a cellist, composer and collaborator has put her in demand among some of the world’s foremost artists in new and creative music, including The Jayhawks, Dan Wilson, British pianist and composer Tony Hymas, and French artists, songwriter/bassist Imbert Imbert and cellist Didier Petit.

Music Under Glass Featuring Erik Brandt & The Urban Hillbilly Quartet

2/21/2016

The affable Erik Brandt was surprisingly specific when asked to describe what his group’s name, The Urban Hillbilly Quartet, means. “‘Urban’ describes the rock; ‘hillbilly’ is the Americana, folk and country; and ‘quartet’ is jazz, improvisation and our instrumental music, with tinges of eastern European melodies.

Music Under Glass Featuring The Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank

2/28/2016

Combining what Minneapolis Star Tribune calls "timeless songwriting chops" with "tremendously played roots music" (Atlantic City Weekly), Hobo Nephews have tirelessly played, sang and stomped their own brand of Americana in big cities and small towns all over the country. The road tested duo has recorded 5 full length records. Their newest release, "American Shuffle" was produced by Trampled By Turtles violinist Ryan Young.
