FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 2015
Saint Paul police are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred at 2:50 p.m. Sunday, June 21.
An off-duty Saint Paul Police Department officer working at the Walmart at 1450 University Ave. in Saint Paul approached a suspected shoplifter in the entryway of the store. The suspect—James Frei, 34, of Tomah, Wis.—pointed a weapon at the officer and fled on foot.
The officer pursued Frei through the parking lot until he got into a pickup truck and pointed the weapon at the officer again, at which point the officer fired his gun at the suspect.
The suspect drove his vehicle onto University Avenue and was pursued by officers. The suspect vehicle crashed on the 1600 block of Edmund Avenue West, and the suspect was apprehended after attempting to flee on foot.
Neither the officer or the suspect was injured. The officer, a five-year veteran of the department, is on three-day administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
No further information about this incident will be released today. Updates will be posted on the Saint Paul Police Department PIO Twitter account, @sppdPIO.
