Motor Vehicle Pursuit
On September 19th, 2023, at approximately 8:05 P.M., a Stearns County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a white Dodge Ram pickup northbound on County Road 1 near 4th Street North in Sartell. The deputy was behind the truck when it drove over the fog line on multiple occasions and at times, half of the vehicle was outside the travel portion of the road. The deputy believed the driver of the vehicle was impaired and attempted to stop the vehicle.
The driver of the Ram did not stop for the deputy’s lights and accelerated. The deputy turned on his siren and the vehicle refused to stop and reached speeds of approximately 100 MPH. After approximately a one-mile pursuit, the vehicle lost control and crashed near the intersection of County Road 1 and Coneflower Lane, in Le Sauk Township. The truck rolled several times. The deputy was able to make verbal contact with the driver, Kevin Johnstone, 45, of Sartell. He told deputies he was not hurt and that he was the only occupant of the truck.
The Sartell Fire Department responded to the scene and extricated Johnstone from the vehicle. Johnstone was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital to be evaluated for injuries. After being cleared Johnstone was booked into the Stearns County Jail on charges of Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle and Third Degree DWI.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Sartell Police Department, Sartell Fire Department, and Mayo Ambulance.
