Capsized Canoe
On May 11, 2022, at approximately 7:07 PM, the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a call of a capsized canoe on Lake Sagatagan located in Collegeville Township. The caller was one of the occupants of the capsized canoe and reported only one of the four occupants in the water had on a life jacket.
St. John’s University Life Safety launched a small boat and retrieved the four male occupants without incident. Two occupants of the canoe were transported by Mayo Ambulance to the St. Cloud Hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia. The other two occupants declined medical attention. One of the occupants of the canoe reported that it had been capsized for approximately 20 minutes before being located and brought back to shore.
St. John’s University Life Safety was assisted by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Mayo Ambulance and St. Johns Fire and Rescue.
As a reminder to all that life jackets are a vital tool in water safety. When participating in any type of water or boating activity it is important that each person has access to a life jacket that is in good condition and well-fitting. Even skilled swimmers are at risk of drowning during a boating accident or in cold waters.
