Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue has partnered with the Lowcountry Alliance for Healthy Youth (LCAHY) to tackle opioid use in our community. This initiative is supported by a $331,000 allocation awarded to the Town of Hilton Head Island through a national settlement with opioid manufacturers, distributors, and retailers.
These settlement funds are designated to support local initiatives aimed at combating the opioid crisis and improving public health outcomes. Fire Rescue has received $93,859 from the South Carolina Opioid Recovery Fund to establish a new Substance Abuse and Mental Health Management Team. This team will proactively assist individuals facing opioid use disorder and co-occurring mental health conditions. Their focus will be on field outreach, peer support, and treatment referrals, representing a significant expansion of the department’s mission beyond traditional emergency response. The program will also enhance collaboration with local agencies to provide long-term support.
LCAHY will utilize the remaining $238,005 to lead a community-wide prevention campaign.

It's National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), and the Town is proud to recognize and celebrate the many contributions of our Hispanic community.
To support this vibrant community, the Town offers a variety of resources to ensure that everyone has access to essential services and programs. This includes translation services, in-person assistance for Spanish-speaking residents, and website features that allow forms and applications to be viewed in Spanish.
Hispanic business owners can also benefit from the Small and Minority-Owned Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Utilization Program, which supports small businesses, including those owned by women and minority individuals, in the Town’s procurement process.
These resources are just the beginning. We look forward to continuing our engagement with the Hispanic community through expanded programs, outreach, and events.

The Town of Hilton Head Island will begin construction of a new pocket park—a small community space—on Thursday, Oct. 2, between the northeast quadrant of Coligny Circle and the Coligny Plaza shopping center.
As part of this capital improvement project, a section of the Coligny Circle pathway connecting Pope Avenue to North Forest Beach Drive will be temporarily closed. Construction fencing will be installed to secure the work area. Selective tree removals will begin the week of Oct. 6 and are expected to be completed by the end of that week. All work will take place Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., depending on the weather.
The Coligny Pocket Park is one of 11 community park projects outlined in the Town’s recently adopted Strategic Action Plan – Fiscal Year 2026-2028. It includes a goal to enhance the Town’s park system, program, and recreational amenities to promote health, connectivity, environmental sustainability, and a high quality of life for Hilton Head Island residents and visitors.

Plus, a Town Council Stormwater Workshop is coming up
It’s Stormwater Week, a perfect time to highlight our commitment to addressing stormwater management. Did you know that Goal #2 of the Town’s Strategic Action Plan is focused on this important issue? Protecting our Island means safeguarding our water, homes, and environment. That’s why we are investing in a high-performing, island-wide stormwater system that adapts to changing conditions and ensures our community remains resilient. Here are some key steps we are taking and will continue to pursue for effective stormwater solutions:
- Conducting a comprehensive assessment of the Stormwater Utility (SWU) Program to enhance preparedness and recovery.
- Prioritizing capital projects that reduce flood risk and improve water quality.
- Developing a comprehensive Island-wide Stormwater Master Plan.
- Assessing the SWU reserves, revenues and stormwater utility rate and revenue model to support Town funding priorities.
- Building partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies to secure funding.
We invite the community to join us next week for our Town Council Workshop, where staff will update Councilmembers and the public on our stormwater initiatives.
Date: Tuesday, Sept. 30
Time: 1 p.m.
Location: Town Hall
We hope to see you there!
