Here are the latest updates on Phase I of our beach renourishment project at Fish Haul Beach!
This Week's Progress (September 6-12)
The Marinex crew finished installing approximately 20,000 feet of pipeline for the renourishment construction process, and is now pumping sand from Bay Point Shoals to the shoreline at Fish Haul Creek.
Beach Access Reminder: Fish Haul Beach Park is now temporarily closed to ensure the safety of the public and the construction crew. The closure is expected to last approximately a week, depending on weather conditions and work progress.
If the park can reopen safely during sand placement, active construction areas will remain closed. Fencing and signage will mark these zones, and staff will be on-site to help manage beach access for the public. All other areas of the beach will remain open when safe to do so.
 Looking Ahead (September 13-19)
-
Fish Haul Creek Work: Sand placement will continue, should weather and equipment conditions remain favorable.
-
Pine Island Work: Marinex will continue mobilizing equipment in preparation for sand placement after work at Fish Haul is complete.

Historic Mitchelville’s groundbreaking for its new Archaeological Research Facility and Auditorium marked a historic milestone. Last week, Mayor Alan Perry, members of Town Council, and Senator Tom Davis joined the community in celebration.
This first-of-its-kind facility will be dedicated to uncovering, preserving, and sharing the powerful legacy of Mitchelville—the nation’s first self-governed town established by formerly enslaved people.
The project helps advance the Town’s Strategic Action Plan Goal #7: Preserve, Protect, and Celebrate Gullah Geechee Culture and Heritage. This new space will ensure that stories of resilience, freedom, and cultural heritage are honored and passed on to future generations.
Congratulations to the Mitchelville Freedom Park Board of Directors, Chairwoman Lola Campbell, Executive Director Ahmad Ward and staff, as well as the many community members, donors, and volunteers whose vision and dedication made this achievement possible.

The Town of Hilton Head Island is celebrating the removal of 11 abandoned and dangerous boats in waterways surrounding the Island, alleviating navigational hazards, environmental risks and safety concerns related to their presence.
State legislation was passed earlier this year that now provides a funding source to help remove more boats faster and easier throughout the state’s coastline, and enacts stricter penalties for people who leave them behind.
According to Mayor Alan Perry, who participated in the removal process this week, “It’s taken a team of people at all levels of government, passionate private citizens, and the will of our legislature to implement a new law to get here… On behalf of the Hilton Head Island Town Council, it’s our honor to serve this community and help ensure our waterways remain the invaluable and cherished places they’ve been for millennia.”
Coordinated by the Town’s Public Safety Director Bob Bromage, the removal effort took place during the past several weeks and included expertise and resources from the Town, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, Beaufort County Public Works, and private citizens and lowcountry mariners Russell Patterson and Rudy Socha.
If you see something in the water that you think might need our attention, please report it through the MyHHI app, available for free in Apple and Google Play stores.

This project reflects Strategic Action Plan Goal #10: Enhancing community well-being through implementation of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and program enhancements. Together, we’re creating spaces that bring people together, promote health, and celebrate our Island’s unique character.
