Town News This Week - November 1, 2024 |

In response to recent inquiries from our community, we want to clarify the current tree maintenance project at the corner of William Hilton Parkway and Squire Pope Road. This work is designed to enhance visibility, improve the safety and appearance of our public spaces, and celebrate the historical significance of these cherished trees, which are approximately 400 to 500 years old.
The Town hired tree care experts to remove the under-story bushes, dead limbs, and vines in and around the two Angel Oaks on the Town-owned property. This includes removing several smaller trees that were obstructing the view of the Angel Oaks and beginning to grow into the Angel Oak canopies and root-feeding.
Root-feeding is a process that involves injecting nutrients directly into the tree's root zone to help with their health. In the coming months, we will also be installing low-voltage lights and low landscaping around the perimeter of the trees to highlight their significance to the historic Stoney neighborhood, the Island community, and visitors.
"Native trees like the Angel Oaks have always been an essential part of Hilton Head Island’s character, and we are dedicated to ensuring they are protected and well-maintained," said Town Manager Marc Orlando. "This initiative not only enhances safety and visibility but also honors the legacy of these majestic Angel Oaks and their place in our community’s history."
As we continue this work, we will inform our community of our efforts. If you have any questions, please reach out to us via email at communications@hiltonheadislandsc.gov.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) recently lowered the speed limit on William Hilton Parkway between Beach City and Dillon roads to 40 mph at the Town's request. This change from 45 to 40 mph aims to enhance safety in this area.
In addition to the speed limit reduction, the Town will schedule additional improvements over the next several months. These improvements include:
- Improved crosswalks and pavement markings.
- Low-level pathway lighting.
- Landscaping.
- Updated signage.
All improvements will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Pedestrians and motorists are advised to exercise caution while traveling through the work area.
